Houston summers are no joke, intense heat, high humidity, and sporadic rain events can stress even the toughest landscapes. But with an organic approach, you can protect your garden and help it thrive naturally, even in the harshest conditions. Here's how:
1. Feed the Soil with Organic Nutrition
Healthy soil is your best defense against summer stress.
Use:
MicroLife 6-2-4 All Organic Multi-Purpose Fertilizer This slow-release, biologically rich fertilizer feeds plants AND the soil, helping roots grow deeper and stronger to withstand drought and heat.Apply in early summer and again mid-season for sustained resilience.
MicroLife Humates Plus Packed with carbon, trace minerals, and beneficial microbes, this improves soil structure and water retention, making your landscape more drought-tolerant.
2. Water Deeply and Mulch Generously
Frequent, shallow watering leads to weak plants. Instead:
Water deeply and early in the morning to encourage deep root systems.
Use 2–4 inches of native mulch to reduce evaporation, cool soil temps, and support beneficial fungi.
Pro Tip: Mix a little MicroLife Super Seaweed into your irrigation system or hose-end sprayer. It reduces plant stress and encourages new root and shoot growth, especially helpful after intense heat or storms.
3. Apply Liquid Organic Boosters for Stress Recovery
During heat waves, a little TLC can go a long way.
Try:
MicroLife Ocean Harvest (liquid organic fertilizer) A powerhouse blend of fish hydrolysate and seaweed, it helps plants bounce back from heat stress, strengthens immune systems, and promotes new growth without burning.
MicroLife Super Seaweed (liquid kelp)Great for foliar sprays or soil drenching to reduce transplant and heat stress. Use biweekly during extreme heat.
4. Go Easy on the Pruning and Avoid Synthetic Chemicals
Pruning encourages new, tender growth, which is especially vulnerable during extreme heat. Prune lightly, if at all, in July and August. Also, avoid synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. They disrupt soil life and can "burn" plants during hot weather. Organic products like MicroLife support the natural ecosystem of your garden.
5. Choose Native & Heat-Tolerant Plants
Use plants that are built to handle Houston’s climate. Native and adapted plants require less water, resist pests, and thrive with organic care.
Great choices include:
Turk’s Cap
Texas Lantana
Salvias
Inland Sea Oats
Gulf Muhly Grass

6. Support Beneficial Insects and Pollinators
Diverse ecosystems are more resilient. Attract bees, butterflies, and beneficial bugs with native flowers and avoid chemical pesticides.
Tip: Use MicroLife Maximum Blooms 3-8-3 on blooming plants, it promotes stronger, longer-lasting blooms that feed pollinators
Stay Ahead of the Heat, the Organic Way
By nurturing the soil and feeding your plants with MicroLife’ s organic products, you’re not just surviving the summer, you’re building a landscape that thrives year-round.
